New York, NY, January 18, 2010--Dramatic civil rights photographs from the 1960s and 1970s, some never before seen publicly, are on display at The Interchurch Center in New York City. The exhibit, "Giving Voice: Unearthing the Ken Thompson Collection," shows both the heroism of the struggle and the forces of oppression that tried to block the way.

Bishop Roy Sano is a retired bishop
and a member of the Council of Bishops of The United Methodist Church.

Microfinance was one of the ways to address the needs of those living in poverty at a conversation on ministry with the poor sponsored by the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries on December 16. Held in New York City at the United Methodist Church of the Village, more than 500 people joined in from around the world via a live webcast. El Buen Pastor choir sang at the Second Annual Hispanic/Latino Ministry Celebration at Grace United Methodist Church in Saginaw, Michigan.

In Ann Arbor, Michigan, 17-year-old Guatemalan-American Jasmine watched her mother being taken to jail by immigration agents. Jasmine was not given a chance to kiss or hug her mother, or even say goodbye. After her mother was deported, her father and sister soon returned to Guatemala, too.

For 10 years, Ken Thompson documented the Civil Rights Movement, capturing images of leaders such as the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in their daily activities. In 1960, a 17-year-old high school senior won a photo contest in his hometown and was recommended by his art teacher to an editor working on a magazine for the United Church of Christ (UCC).

London, September 1, 2009--The island nation of Fiji has been suspended from the British Commonwealth for refusing to move toward democratic elections next year, according to a report by the BBC on September 1. The Fijian political situation is of importance to the international Methodist community because the Methodist Church there is also at odds with the government.

Dominic Ding was a lost boy from Sudan. He will be one of many refugees to tell their personal stories at an awareness event. Most Americans do not understand the complexities of being a refugee. Debbie Umipig-Julian with Mustafa, Eva, and their children, KC, and Zilan. Mustafa wandered through the mountains for a long time and finally had to flee his home country in order to preserve his life after he quit a militant group. A Kurd from Turkey, Mustafa ended up in Japan where he met Eva, a Filipina working in the entertainment industry.
