In Mission Together Uses New Media to Connect People
I sent Patrick Friday an email, suggesting
that
we meet for breakfast in the cafeteria for a
conversation about social media and mission.
Patrick suggested, instead, we should chat, pray,
and invite others to join us at a Google+ "hang
out."
A couple of emails later, Patrick and I logged on
to Google+ for our "hang out," a four-way
videoconference with Patti Bacher in De Pere,
Wisconsin, and Mi Rhang Baek in Madison,
Alabama.

A Love Letter from an Individual Volunteer
I've seen so much here in Honduras. I've felt
so much, laughed so much, and hurt so much here.
I learned how to make coconut bread, how to
change multiple diapers at once, how to be
patient, how to stick up for myself, how to live
alone, how to teach a class, how to catch a
gecko, how to speak Spanish, how to wash clothes
by hand, and how to ration. I learned countless
lessons on humility, honesty, sacrifice, and
self-control.

Singing the Church Together: Yo sé que estás aquí
Have you ever heard a song and thought, "I'd
love my choir to learn that song?" Bill Rose,
Director of Music at St. Luke-Simpson United
Methodist Church, Lake Charles, Louisiana, was
participating in a Global Praise reading session
when he had that thought. After a discussion
with Global Praise staff, he decided to arrange
the song "Yo sé que estás aquí" [#2, Global
Praise 3, ©2004, GBGMusik] for his choir.

Mission Initiatives: Starting New Churches Outside the US
One hundred six new congregations were started
outside the United States in 2009 through a
series of United Methodist Mission Initiatives
sponsored by the General Board of Global
Ministries. The 13 initiatives--ranging from
Mongolia to Honduras--are what Thomas Kemper,
the mission agency's new chief executive,
calls "front-line efforts" in pursuit of the
denomination's goal of "making disciples of
Jesus Christ for the transformation of the
world."

Inspiration from Nicaragua
Several years ago, I served as a Global
Justice Volunteer in Nicaragua. It remains one
of the most humbling experiences of my life. I
lived and worked for eight weeks with the people
of Alamikambang, Nicaragua, in what seemed to be
the middle of nowhere. As I reflect on this
verse, I am reminded of these inspiring people
who are faithful enough to cling to the love of
God in everything that they do.

The Word that Breaks our Codes Christmas Day, December 25, 2008
I grew up in the US speaking English. At 56, I’ve
now also been speaking Spanish for the past 20
years. I still find it magical. It isn’t that I
believe what my Spanish teacher said about
Spanish being God’s language. Nor does it feel
magical because I learned to speak it as if by
magic. I did not.

The Presence of Grace and Peace Christmas Eve, December 24, 2008
A man sat on a log at the edge of the washed-out
hillside.
A few hours earlier, heavy rains on the
deforested hilltop had become a tidal wave of
mud
washing everything in its path into the river
below. Hundreds of houses were lost. No one knew
how many people had escaped and how many were
buried in the mud.

Hallelujah Moment From Honduras "Go to school!"
Living in the poverty of the small village of
Talanga, a valley nestled between the mountains
of Honduras, a young mother of six growing
children had never aspired to anything beyond the
life she now experienced with her family.
Dulcibella left school at the age of 12, later
married and began raising a family. It was not
uncommon for the people of her village to leave
school at such an early age and join the daily
struggle for survival.

Missionary Minute: August 20, 2006
When people let God into their lives and into
their relationships with each other,
transformation begins.
Two years ago, I witnessed a little girl’s death
from malnutrition. And although that was very
sad, I also saw how God intervened and saved the
girl’s sister from the same fate. She is alive
and well today. That’s transformation!

rural poverty in Zimbabwe through nutrition
programs, food distribution, and self-supporting
activities such as gardening. Hurricane Adrian

Staying the Course in "Mega-Disaster" Rehabilitation
How well do relief operations follow through with
rehabilitation after "mega-disasters" such as the
earthquake and tsunamis that swept the Indian
Ocean on December 26? "In big, complex recoveries
from mega-disasters, UMCOR plans to be in place
for a long time-- for years," said the Rev.
Kristin Sachen of the United Methodist Committee
on Relief (UMCOR).

'God began to call me to new Christian life.'
I grew in the Methodist Church of Danlí, working
with the victims of Hurricane Mitch. I worked in
medical brigades and helped people in the
emotional-recovery program. It was there that I
could see the Lord helping my country through
this terrible crisis.
