The concept of the roundtable is finding a fresh application in the global mission of The United Methodist Church. Although "round table" may conjure the image of King Arthur and his knights sitting in a circle symbolizing their equal standing and unity of purpose, the roundtable is also a process.

Before the January 12, 2010, earthquake, the people of Haiti had not had a major seismic event for decades--though they had endured countless social and political upheavals, along with natural catastrophes, throughout their history.

Late in the afternoon of Tuesday, January 12, 2010, having just finished eating their usual dinner of beans and rice, the young patients at Grace Children's Hospital returned to the main area of the inpatient ward. There, the infants rested in their cribs, their bellies full of milk, while the older children gathered in front of the television set. It was 4:53 p.m., and winter darkness had begun to fall on the city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

If you ask those who have worked in Haiti about the country's character, you'll probably get an answer close to the one that Melissa Crutchfield, of the United Methodist Committee on Relief, recently gave me. "Haiti," she said, "is a country where endurance, strength, and faith are in great supply. Haitians are resilient, tough, and they have a fighting spirit."

The mission agency of The United Methodist Church is strengthening its strategy in response to the extensive needs in Haiti. As part of this process, the Rev. James L. Gulley is broadening his consultative role in Haiti with the General Board of Global Ministries. For more than a year he has served as an agricultural consultant for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), the relief and development arm of Global Ministries. In his expanded role he will be a Global Ministries and UMCOR coordinator for Haiti.
