Designated Relief Giving Soars in 2010: Missionary Support Holds Even
New York, NY, March 1, 2011--Total United
Methodist designated mission giving soared in
2010 as a result of response to the earthquake
in Haiti. Designated gifts for missionary
support held steady from 2009 to 2010.

SPSARV Grant Applications Are Due January 15, 2011
SPSARV grant applications to fund ministries
and initiatives globally that support The United
Methodist Church's position on alcohol, other
drugs, and drug-related violence are due by
January 15, 2011. Funding decisions for spring
and summer funding will be made in March 2011.

Ministry with the Poor Project Receives Major North Carolina Grant
Raleigh, NC , May 6, 2009--A $300,000 grant will
cover part of the start-up costs of a United
Methodist three-year program to lift 75 families
out of poverty and help communities to make
strides toward eliminating poverty in three
counties of western North Carolina.

Latin American Women Scholars Gathered in Perú
Recently, a year after her election as
congresswoman of the Republic of Perú, María
Cleofé Sumire de Conde, talked about politics and
faith to a group of Latin American women
scholars. Ms. Sumire is a Quechua indigenous
leader from Cuzco, in the Andean highlands, an
attorney, and Methodist Church member.

U.N. Foundation Helps Fund United Methodist Health Summit
The United Nations Foundation is providing a
$100,000 grant to help underwrite a meeting of
United Methodist leaders that will focus on a
possible churchwide response to global health
care challenges.
The grant, made to the Foundation for United
Methodist Communications, was announced Oct. 10.
Leaders from around the denomination will meet in
Washington in December to address urgent issues
such as HIV/AIDS and malaria, particularly on the
continent of Africa.

Disaster Provides Lessons as Relief Workers Prepare for Winter
Throughout Pakistan, people face the challenges
of a variety of recurrent disasters, but the
country's mountainous north, according to CWS
Director Marvin Parvez, is Pakistan's only multi-
hazard area, subject to mudslides, flash floods,
earthquakes, and more. "You name it, you get it
in the north," Parvez said.

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the United
Methodist Church's loans and scholarships office
began combing through records to determine which
students receiving financial aid might have had
their studies or their jobs interrupted by the
storm.

Startup Grants for Young United Methodist Women Units
In order to assist District Units, Circles and
Subgroups (within the local unit) of teens and
college/university women become full partners in
mission through United Methodist Women, the
Women’s Division has established funds to provide
Start-Up Grants during the 2000-2004 quadrennium.

UMCOR in Afghanistan: Helping the Returnees
Russian helicopter gun-ships roared over the
Shamali Plain, north of Kabul, Afghanistan, and
targeted the village of Rabat. In one of the
houses 11-year-old Ghulum Rabani huddled with
his family as bombs exploded outside. Then
Rabani’s greatest fear happened, a bomb hit his
adobe home directly, blowing him to
unconsciousness.

Hispanic Leadership Development Fund: Health & Welfare Ministries
In 1986, the former Health and Welfare Ministries
Program Department established the Hispanic
Leadership Development Fund. Grants are made
annually to persons of Hispanic descent (from
North, South, and Central America and islands of
the Western Hemisphere).

Harry R. Kendall Hospital and Home Fund
Harry R. Kendall was a co-owner and founder of
the Washington National Life Insurance Company of
Evanston, Illinois. Prior to his death in 1958, a
large part of his fortune was placed in trust
with the provision that income be paid to the
Board of Hospitals and Homes of the Methodist
Church and its successor organizations and used
for stipulated purposes. Over $6 million has been
allocated since 1958 for worthy projects and
students.

Dora Ames Lee Leadership Development Fund: Health & Welfare Ministries
The Dora Ames Lee Leadership Development Fund was
established in 1980 by Dora Ames Lee, M.D. The
candidate must be a professed Christian,
preferably a United Methodist. The grantee must
be of Asian American or Native American descent.
Only U.S. citizens will be considered.
