The Growth of Methodism in Africa A Contribution to Methodism in the United States
During the 2008 United Methodist General
Conference, clergy and lay leaders reminded
participants about the growth of The United
Methodist Church in Africa and the decline in
membership in the United States and Western
Europe. The 2008 North Texas Annual Conference,
which I attended as a clergy member, also
dedicated much time to discussions regarding
membership.

Church Court: Structural Changes Require Legislation
The top court of The United Methodist Church has
ruled that the denomination's legislative body
would need to enact enabling legislation in 2012
to change the church's structure in the United
States.
The Judicial Council, in its first meeting since
the election of five new members last spring,
also remanded two cases on key issues—church
membership and same-gender marriages—back to
their respective conferences, citing an absence
of official documentation needed to decide the
cases.

The Bigger Picture
I'm an editor and word dithering is important to
me. I think we ought to take the time to get the
words right, because words should represent what
we really mean to say. We need to listen to each
other and change our minds every now and then
about the words we print in our books of
Resolutions and Discipline. I'm glad our
doctrines are living documents that stretch and
grow and change with the growing pains of our
church. But is a committee of 1000 members the
best way to get this done?

Missionaries Serve at General Conference
Missionaries made significant contributions to
the proceedings of the 2008 General Conference
serving as delegates, interpreters,
photographers, accompaniers, and witnesses.
Their
quiet labors, which took place in large part
behind the scenes, created bridges of
understanding between people, among delegations,
and across the boundaries of national borders
that separate people from one another.

phrase was added in the revision and will now
appear in the United Methodist Book of
