A "New" Mission Initiative Grows Up
New York, NY, April 13, 2011--A little more
than 20 years ago United Methodist people took a
bold step in reigniting in Russia mission work
interrupted three-quarters of a century earlier
by
the communist revolution. It became the
conceptual, if not the structural, model for what
are today more than a dozen widely dispersed "new
mission initiatives" of the denomination.

Rethink Mission: Trends in Missionary Service
Recent trends in missionary service reflect a
greater awareness and respect for cultural
context, simple living, communication, and
diversity. These trends may seem forward-looking,
yet the changing tides of missionary service refer
back to the past and to the life of Jesus Christ.

Road Trip with Roadmap to Renewal
Picture yourself joining seven to twelve
others
from your church on a road trip in a van.
The team starts out knowing that they want to
arrive at a destination that is better than the
current reality of their community of faith.
Along
the way they converse with each other. They get
out of the van and talk to people in their area
about community needs. They visit other churches
to learn what has made them healthy and vital.
They rediscover their church setting and discern
what God is calling their church to be and to do
at this point in time.

Breaking the Cycle of Malaria and Poverty
Malaria kills. It kills a child every 30 seconds
in sub-Saharan Africa, and those that die are
disproportionately poor. The anopheles mosquito
that spreads this deadly, but preventable,
illness does not distinguish between rich and
poor. But the difference between life and death
often depends on one's environment and ability
to
get treatment very soon after falling ill.
