The Thang family resettles in Fort Worth, Texas, from Burma. Founded more than 60 years ago, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) began as a ministry to the refugees of World War II. That core function continues today with the work of UMCOR's Refugee Ministry office. With its long- standing partner, Church World Service, UMCOR has sought to provide welcome to refugees, working with United Methodist congregations to accompany refugee families as they attempt to build new lives in the United States.

A Student at the Asian Rural Institute enjoys the work that will help shape him into an effective leader. We continue to lift our brothers and sisters in Japan in prayer in the wake of the March 11 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear threat in Japan. The General Board of Global Ministries and the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) are working with church organizations that continue a mission story that opened in 1873, the year the first Methodist missionary arrived in Japan.

The mission agency of The United Methodist Church is strengthening its strategy in response to the extensive needs in Haiti. As part of this process, the Rev. James L. Gulley is broadening his consultative role in Haiti with the General Board of Global Ministries. For more than a year he has served as an agricultural consultant for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), the relief and development arm of Global Ministries. In his expanded role he will be a Global Ministries and UMCOR coordinator for Haiti.

Howard Heiner, a United Methodist missionary.

New York, NY, April 14, 2011--Howard Heiner, a United Methodist missionary for 24 years, died on April 9 in Ashland, Oregon at the age of 81. He and his wife Peggy served in Bolivia, Chile, Somalia, and Nicaragua, retiring in the mid- 1990s.

Heiner's passing was observed on April 11 at the opening of the semi-annual meeting of the directors of the General Board of Global Ministries, the worldwide United Methodist mission agency through which he served.

These include four top awards, 11 awards for excellence, and four certificates of merit.

After the vote to merge, Olle Alkholm (representative from the Mission Covenant Church), Bishop Christian Alsted (the Nordic and Baltic area) and Elisabeth Englund (chair of the annual conference council in Sweden) cheerfully agreed this was a good decision.

New York, NY, November 16, 2010--The small United Methodist Church in Sweden is moving toward becoming part of a new denomination expected to be formed by merger with the Baptist Union of Sweden and the Mission Covenant Church.
