New Developments in Fiji Crisis
London, September 1, 2009--The island nation
of Fiji has been suspended from the British
Commonwealth for refusing to move toward
democratic elections next year, according to a
report by the BBC on September 1. The Fijian
political situation is of importance to the
international Methodist community because the
Methodist Church there is also at odds with the
government.

Fijian Methodist Leaders Appear in Court, Second Hearing Date Is Set
London, August 14, 2009--The Methodist Church
in Britain reported that nine Methodist Church
leaders earlier arrested in Fiji have appeared
in court on charges of violating public
emergency regulations and were released pending
a second hearing on September 24.

Mission Agency Leader Endorses Appeal to Protect Pakistani Christians
The Rev. Edward W. Paup, general secretary
of the General Board of Global Ministries,
seconded the call from the
Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia, secretary general of the
World Council of
Churches, based in Geneva, Switzerland. Dr.
Kobia said that this is the
third such incident in the last two months.

Albanian United Methodists Get First Native-Born Pastor and First Hymnal

important "firsts" in the late spring and early

Retired Mission Leader John Johannaber Dies at 86
New York, NY, June 25, 2009--The Rev. Dr.
John W. Johannaber, who once headed the mission
personnel unit of the United Methodist General
Board of Global Ministries, died at his home in
Oxford, Georgia, on June 9, 2009. He was 86
years old.

David K. Yemba of Central Congo confirms that
there were no life-threatening injuries in the
crash of a small mission plane at an airstrip
