Alexanda Castro is a United Methodist missionary from Comombia, who serves as treasurer of the United Methodist Mission in Honduras, discusses finances with pastors from two congregations.

Missionary service in the 21st century follows the New Testament's mission mandate to move outward from Judea into all parts of the world. Strongly influenced by the 19th century Protestant mission initiative that originated in Europe and North America, missionary service--especially in the Methodist tradition--combined spiritual piety with social ministry. In the 19th century, parts of Africa, Asia, and Latin America were considered to be suitable areas for mission.

Thomas Kemper, general secretary (chief executive) of the General Board of Global Ministries

In addition to standard business meetings, the Global Ministries fall board meeting will include opportunities for worship, building new relationships, and actively exploring new ways to facilitate mission. For the first time, directors will meet at the agency's New York City offices. The semi-annual meeting is scheduled to take place October 10-13, 2011.

United Methodist Bishop Heinrich Bolleter, Geneva Secretary of the World Methodist Council, offers his observations on Edinburgh 2010, the ecumenical world mission conference held in Edinburgh, Scotland, on June 2-6. The event marked the one hundredth anniversary of a landmark missionary conference in 1910. Bishop Bolleter, who is retired from the Southern and Century Europe Central Conference, represented the World Methodist Council on a committee of "stakeholders" that assisted in planning the 2010 conference, which had the theme "Witnessing to Christ Today."

One hundred six new congregations were started outside the United States in 2009 through a series of United Methodist Mission Initiatives sponsored by the General Board of Global Ministries. The 13 initiatives--ranging from Mongolia to Honduras--are what Thomas Kemper, the mission agency's new chief executive, calls "front-line efforts" in pursuit of the denomination's goal of "making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world."
