Russian United Methodists on the Road to Growth
(From www.minnesotaumc.org)
At annual conference session in May, I
asked, “Why did the United Methodist cross the
road?” The answer is based on the old why-did-
the-chicken-cross-the-road jokes: to get to the
other side. But why would United Methodists want
to get to the other side? Because Jesus is
always crossing the road to the other side,
where our neighbor is.

Why Did You Shape Me Like This?
The question "Why did you shape me like
this?" is addressed to God, arising from
passages in the books of Jeremiah and Romans on
the master potter and the clay. Bishop Bruce
Ough of West Ohio led a Bible study on this
theme at the annual meeting of directors of the
United Methodist General Board of Global
Ministries on October 15 in Stamford,
Connecticut.

Church? What Is Church?: "Wandering Generation" Looks for Connections
Orlando, FL, August 4, 2008--The fact that many
Americans have little idea what is meant
by "church" or what happens there was a recurrent
theme at the 2008 United Methodist School of
Congregational Development.
The point was underscored by sociological data
and pastoral experience, but more attention was
given to ways of responding creatively to the
situation than to decrying it.

Church Developers Explore United Methodist 'Myths'
The notion that The United Methodist Church is
dying has been repeated so often that it has
become a belief, when in fact it is a myth,
according to a church executive and author.
The reality is that the 11.5-million member
denomination is poised for hope, said the Rev.
Craig Miller to church leaders attending a
workshop about myths of The United Methodist
Church. The class was held during the 2008 United
Methodist School of Congregational Development.

Hallelujah Moment from Panama: What Difference Does a Volunteer Make?
"These kids can't sleep at night just thinking
about what's going to happen the next day," one
grandmother said when asked what the children
thought about vacation Bible school. The only
topic of conversation in the small community was
about the big "fiesta" planned to celebrate the
end of the week.
