"Across the Miles" in Mission
Greensboro, North Carolina, November 20, 2009-
-Isaiah, prophet of ancient Israel, told his
people that God was saying to them, "I will give
you as a light to the nations that my salvation
may reach to the ends of the earth." This
promise provided the theme scripture for "Across
the Miles," a consultation focused on United
Methodist mission in the Eastern Europe and the
Balkan countries.

Nikolaev Heads United Methodist Seminary in Moscow
The Rev. Sergei V. Nikolaev has been elected
president of the Russia United Methodist
Theological Seminary in Moscow.
The election by the seminary's board of trustees
was effective Jan. 1. Nikolaev will continue to
teach as the E. Stanley Jones Professor of
Evangelism as part of the seminary's Ruediger and
Gerlinde Minor Chair.

Church Hymn-singing Has Evolved over Centuries
When Charles Wesley began penning his more than
7,000 hymns back in the 18th century, hymn-
singing was not part of the worship life of
Anglican congregations. In fact, until 1821, hymn-
singing was illegal in the Church of England.

United Methodist Seminary in Germany Has New Dean and is Showing Growth
Dr. Joerg Barthel, a professor of Old Testament,
is the new dean, or rector, of the United
Methodist Theological Seminary in Reutlingen. He
was elected earlier in the month by the trustees
of the school.

New bishop Meets with United Methodist Churches in Eurasia
In the year since his election as the new bishop
for the United Methodist Church's Eurasia Area,
Hans Vaxby has established a goal of visiting
every district.
Vaxby has met with pastors and church leaders in
five districts so far, conducting sessions "for
teaching, inspiration and consultation,"
according to a Jan. 27 report. The Eurasia Area
includes the Russia Annual (regional) Conference
and four provisional conferences.

United Methodists Among Signers of German Agreement on Mutual Recognition of Baptism
The United Methodist Church is one of 11
denominations in Germany that have agreed to
mutual recognition of Christian baptism. The
parties also include the Roman Catholic and
Lutheran Churches.
"The agreement is a big step forward in the
ecumenical fellowship in Germany," said Bishop
Rosemarie Wenner, the United Methodist bishop in
Germany, who was reached at a meeting of the
Council of Bishops in Myrtle Beach, South
Carolina. She responded to questions by email.

Estonian United Methodist Church Celebrates Its 100th Anniversary
A century of Methodism in Estonia is being
observed this year, with a major celebration set
for early June.
Methodism came to the northern-most of the three
Baltic countries with traveling lay preachers
