Greensboro, North Carolina, November 20, 2009- -Isaiah, prophet of ancient Israel, told his people that God was saying to them, "I will give you as a light to the nations that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth." This promise provided the theme scripture for "Across the Miles," a consultation focused on United Methodist mission in the Eastern Europe and the Balkan countries.

 Announces Year-Long Educational Effort

Rev. Finn Uth of Denmark, Chair of the United Methodist European Board on Drug and Alcohol Concerns, participated in a joint planning session with the United Methodist African Task Force on Substance Abuse and Related Violence. This campaign begins with a five-part series of online articles during September, the 19th annual National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month in the United States. It will continue for the next year through a quarterly reading circle for interested United Methodists.

Bishop Hans Vaxby residing bishop for The United Methodist Church's Eurasia Area. In the year since his election as the new bishop for the United Methodist Church's Eurasia Area, Hans Vaxby has established a goal of visiting every district. Vaxby has met with pastors and church leaders in five districts so far, conducting sessions "for teaching, inspiration and consultation," according to a Jan. 27 report. The Eurasia Area includes the Russia Annual (regional) Conference and four provisional conferences.

 Agreement on Mutual Recognition of Baptism

Retired Bishop Walter Klaiber of Germany. The United Methodist Church is one of 11 denominations in Germany that have agreed to mutual recognition of Christian baptism. The parties also include the Roman Catholic and Lutheran Churches. "The agreement is a big step forward in the ecumenical fellowship in Germany," said Bishop Rosemarie Wenner, the United Methodist bishop in Germany, who was reached at a meeting of the Council of Bishops in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She responded to questions by email.

 Celebrates Its 100th Anniversary

Kuressaare Methodist Church building,  the first Methodist church building in Estonia. A century of Methodism in Estonia is being observed this year, with a major celebration set for early June. Methodism came to the northern-most of the three Baltic countries with traveling lay preachers from Russia in 1907.
