Labor Day: Continuing Advocacy for Workers
Labor Day is not an excuse to buy items on
sale
at department stores.
Labor is a legacy of 19th-century US workers who
fought for and won legal guarantees for workers,
such as the garment workers who made (and make)
the clothes sold in the sales racks at department
stores.

Lent as a Journey
Jesus is almost always on the road in the New
Testament Gospels, first traveling around
Galilee, preaching, healing, and teaching his
disciples the lessons of faith; then in Matthew,
Mark, and Luke, he makes a prolonged journey to
Jerusalem.

When Celebrating Jesus Is Not Easy
Public celebration of Christmas--public
testament of faith in Jesus Christ--is not
always easy, or even safe. As we move into a new
year, my prayer list includes persons and
situations in which Christian brothers and
sisters lost their lives in recent days because
of their faith, or where a public official was
killed for trying to protect religious rights of
Christians.

Ethnic and Cross-Cultural Churches Important in United Methodist Future
Nashville, Tennessee, August 3, 2010--Racial
and ethnic communities, along with immigrants,
will play important roles in the future of The
United Methodist Church in the United States.
More cross-cultural ministries are also
emerging. These facts were clearly in evidence
at the 2010 School of Congregational Development
meeting in Nashville July 29 to August 2.

Historic Law Strengthens US Tobacco Regulations Stronger Tobacco Policies Needed Worldwide, Especially in Developing Countries
In 2007, I lost a wonderful friend and lovely
sister-in-law after she succumbed to lung cancer
at age 51. "Angie" was diagnosed the first week
of April 2007 with stage-four cancer, and died a
few months later in September. She left behind a
beautiful adult daughter, brilliant and handsome
grandson, a husband, brothers, parents, and many
who loved her dearly. She had smoked cigarettes
for as long as her 30-year-old daughter could
remember.
