The situation in Japan at present is not conducive to relief volunteers coming in from other countries. Neither UMCOR nor the General Board of Global Ministries facilitates volunteers in disaster zones unless they are requested by local partners or government agencies. No such requests have been received to date from Japan.

arrow icon. The Faces of Clean Water in Nicaragua
The traditional way of collecting water in Nicaragua requires women and children to walk for miles to a stream or river to fill containers to carry home.

For untold years, women and children in Las Mesas, Nicaragua, walked two miles each way to get water. Grandmothers, mothers, and children made this trip several times a day, every day-- walking in flimsy flip-flops across sharp rocks and hard-baked soil. They were going to fetch 5- gallon buckets of water, each filled bucket weighing 40 pounds.

Blue Jay calling, Northern End of Lake George, Ticonderoga, NY.

God's creation is in crisis. We, the Bishops of The United Methodist Church, cannot remain silent while God's people and God's planet suffer. This beautiful natural world is a loving gift from God, the Creator of all things seen and unseen. God has entrusted its care to all of us, but we have turned our backs on God and on our responsibilities.

Cliff Dweller-Navajo country; Canyon de Chelly National Park, Arizona.

It used to be that Native Americans cared for the earth like no others. Not only did we believe that we came from the earth, but we literally believed that the earth was our mother. Then, as time passed on and human technology abounded, we began to get careless and reckless in our way of life. Now our caring for the earth seems to have dropped by the wayside.

Communities in Haiti find refuge under tents at a nearby basketball court.

It was Tuesday morning. Since Palm Sunday I have been experiencing Holy Week in a different way from previous years. I have been preparing for my first trip to Haiti, which is also my first trip as Deputy General Secretary nominated to lead the Mission and Evangelism Program of Global Ministries. The trip to Haiti gave me a special insight into Jesus' walk to the cross. I saw His experience of death and resurrection re- lived by the people of Haiti. I felt I was about to meet Him again in the suffering of that people.

United Methodist Women's delegation to the Copenhagen Climate Conference in December 2009.

Today's gospel text is Jesus' lament over Jerusalem. "How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!" Lent is a time for all of us to examine our willingness to be disciples of Jesus Christ.

New friends from five different African countries and the United States have kept in touch via email and data-sharing sites. Not long ago, I participated in a training event in Uganda. Participants in the training came together from five different countries in East Africa. I have stayed in touch with a few of them; we share pictures, audio recordings of the training sessions, video, and links to news stories via email discussing events in our respective countries.

Solar ovens help alleviate deforestation; they also reduce air pollution thereby reducing the risk of some lung and eye diseases associated with tending cooking fires.

I remember the painstaking way in which sinew and fat were removed from the "goat parts" and laid out in the solar ovens on a barren field in preparation for cooking.

arrow icon. Singing With Creation
The Spiritual Image Choir of South Hayward United Methodist Church in California sings during a morning worship at the 2008 United Methodist General Conference in Fort Worth, Texas. I remember how I started to cry--on the subway during rush hour--one winter day in the mid 1990s. I could not stop the tears from coming to my eyes. It was remarkable, because I started to cry over a loss of something that I didn't even know existed! I had just read a small article in the daily newspaper about the phenomenon of "singing sand," which appears in many parts of the world, be it sand by the shores of the world's seas or in remote deserts.
