Hallelujah Moment from El Salvador: "The World Is My Parish"
The two little girls were entertaining
themselves in the church during a teacher-
training seminar. During this brief interlude,
they provided a poignant lesson that summed up
for me what it means to be the global church.

UMCOR Responds to Hurricane Stan, Volcanic Eruption in Central America
Days of unrelenting rains spawned by Hurricane
Stan caused massive flooding and mudslides in
Guatemala, Mexico, and El Salvador. More than a
thousand are feared dead in Guatemala alone.
This devastating loss is in addition to
destroyed roads, homes, crops, and livestock.
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)
is currently assessing the situation to
determine the most effective long-term response
to this tragedy.

Central America Woes: Crumbling Mountains, Waterlogged Plains, and a Volcano Roaring to Life
Please give: UMCOR Advance #501300, Central
America Emergency. Rescuers are slogging
through dangerous territory in a five-country
region waterlogged by relentless rains spawned
by Hurricane Stan. Whole mountainsides are
crumbling, and the mudslides are killers--1,400
people in one village in Guatemala, according to
press reports. Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador,
and Mexico are also affected.

UMCOR Hotline, May 24, 2005
Long-term recovery from last season's four
consecutive hurricanes is quietly treading
forward. UMCOR provided a grant to help tackle
rural poverty in Zimbabwe through nutrition
programs, food distribution, and self-supporting
activities such as gardening. Hurricane Adrian
rolled through El Salvador and Honduras late last
week.

Holiday Season of Conscience -- End Child Labor Campaign
No one wants to purchase products made by
children, teenaged girls--or any workers--
stripped of their rights and forced to work long
hours in harsh sweatshop conditions under armed
guards for wages of 20-30¢ an hour. The people
of
the United States deserve the chance to raise
our
voices and affirm the dignity of life and human
rights over corporate indifference and greed.

A Close-Up Look at Fair Trade in the Coffee Lands of El Salvador
I enjoy coffee every day, including Sundays in
my home church, Bellaire United Methodist Church
in southwest Houston. Until recently, I did not
think about the men and women who labored to
grow the coffee in my cup. Now I see how a small
decision, like the brand of coffee I buy, can
make a difference in their lives.

In El Salvador, Volunteers Build Homes and Offer Vacation Bible School
Asbury United Methodist Church from Maitland,
Florida sent a mission team to Jayaque, El
Salvador from May 31 to June 7, 2003. Our
mission
was to build homes for victims of the 2001
earthquakes, offer Vacation Bible School for the
local children, and to build relationships with
the people of El Salvador. This was a return
trip
for our church as we sent a team to Jayaque in
2002. We were very excited to return and once
again serve in Jayaque.

"Beautiful Houses" Bring Smiles in El Salvador
Under the blistering mid-day heat in La Paz,
Antonia Posada sieves sand for a concrete mix.
Her house in the city's San Lorenzo housing
project is almost finished. She says, "I feel
quite happy and I always will be thankful to God
and all those people who have helped us to have
these beautiful houses."

From Russia with Love: Two Month’s Salary for El Salvador
Fifty Dollars for the earthquake victims in El
Salvador - a nice gift, though nothing
extraordinary.
But this particular donation took on great
significance when I read the note attached by the
United Methodist Board of Global Ministries
financial officer for the area. It said, "This
is a gift from a small church called Holy Trinity
UMC in St. Petersburg, Russia.

A United Methodist Missionary Describes the El Salvador Earthquake
Thanks to those of you who have called, sent
email messages, and prayed for us here in
battered El Salvador. Carter and I and our friend
Brian (who had the bad luck to be visiting this
week!) are all together and fine after
yesterday's 7.6 scale earthquake that went from
Costa Rica to Mexico. Apparently, most of the
damage (and the epicenter of the earthquake) are
here in El Salvador.
