When Celebrating Jesus Is Not Easy
Public celebration of Christmas--public
testament of faith in Jesus Christ--is not
always easy, or even safe. As we move into a new
year, my prayer list includes persons and
situations in which Christian brothers and
sisters lost their lives in recent days because
of their faith, or where a public official was
killed for trying to protect religious rights of
Christians.

Bible Study: Prepare the Way of the Lord
“Prepare the way of the Lord...”
Matthew 3:3b
With these words, John began a short career proclaiming the
long-awaited Messiah was coming. His message was not new --
just delivered in a new way. People of his day recognized it as
the words of the Prophet Isaiah: “Prepare the way of the Lord.”

Middle East Christians need contact with other Christians, Day says
Christians in the Middle East need to connect
with their Western counterparts, according to a
United Methodist official who recently traveled
to the region.
In countries like Lebanon and Syria, the
population of Christians - although still
significant - has declined, the Rev. R. Randy
Day, chief executive, United Methodist General
Board of Global Ministries pointed out. The big
concern, he added, is "how to continue to
witness and function as minorities."

Doing Hard Time: The State of Prisons in the U.S. -- UMW Action Alert
At the end of 2002, over 2.1 million people
sat in prisons and jails in the United States,
the highest prison population in the history of
this country’s corrections system.
The number of prisons in the United States has
dramatically increased over the past 3 decades,
with corrections facilities being built in
record
numbers in communities across the country.
Billions of dollars in taxpayer money have paid
for this prison boom.
