New York, NY, November 10, 2009--More than $1.8 million in "mission opportunity grants" were approved or confirmed by directors of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries at their annual meeting in Stamford, Connecticut, in mid-October.

Winchester, Virginia, October 25, 2009-- A "Service of Life and Resurrection for The Rev. Dr. James C. Logan," 77, was held in Winchester, Virginia, on Saturday, October 24. The long-time professor at Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, DC, died on October 17 at a medical center in Winchester.

For 10 years, Ken Thompson documented the Civil Rights Movement, capturing images of leaders such as the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in their daily activities. In 1960, a 17-year-old high school senior won a photo contest in his hometown and was recommended by his art teacher to an editor working on a magazine for the United Church of Christ (UCC).

New friends from five different African countries and the United States have kept in touch via email and data-sharing sites. Not long ago, I participated in a training event in Uganda. Participants in the training came together from five different countries in East Africa. I have stayed in touch with a few of them; we share pictures, audio recordings of the training sessions, video, and links to news stories via email discussing events in our respective countries.

Professor Meeli Tankler, new president of the Baltic Methodist Theological Seminary, was the unanimous choice of the board of trustees and of the Estonia Annual Conference.

Tallinn, Estonia--The 15th anniversary of the largest United Methodist theological seminary in Europe was marked by the installation of a new president and an espiscopal address linking the role of theological schools to the practice of Christian mission.

Anna, House Mother at Instituto Agricola Kusayapu, Methodist Extension to Andean Youth (EMANA). Through the ministry of missionary Becky Harrell and EMANA, children like Anna discover and freely share that God's love has no beginning and no end.

Harrell, now a missionary, came to realize that many persons who want to see only beauty and eat only delicacies have "holes" within that go unfilled. She says, "During my years in Chile, I have witnessed a filling of the 'hole' among many members of Volunteers in Mission (VIM) teams or individuals who have ventured to live and work with those living in poverty."

The UMC Kenya Team from Oregon and Idaho built Beatrice's house while in Kenya on a three-week mission trip. Maua, Kenya, July 8, 2009--If you ever met Beatrice you would never forget her. She has a joy and smile that make your heart sing. Beatrice is HIV-positive and is certainly living positively, but she has a very unusual problem-- her feet.

Earlier this spring, the Global Praise program of the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church together with the United Methodist Women's division of Global Ministries held a weekend training event in Richmond, VA. The event gathered seasoned and upcoming songleaders from around the country together to share resources and experiences in hopes of providing a unique opportunity for cultivating the art of songleading and a passion for global music among United Methodists.

Donwell Dube, 39, a graduate student at United Methodist-related Africa University, wanted to study how effective humanitarian aid was in the response to the cholera outbreak and chose Budiriro as a case study.

Colegio Rio Colorado, a mission-founded school near Bolivia, Yucumo, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The institution, which focuses on agricultural, technical, and general studies for middle and high school students, was started as a partnership between the Evangelical Methodist Church in Bolivia and the General Board of Global Ministries. Four missionary families have served Rio Colorado. Below is an account of the anniversary from John and Suzanne Funk, the current missionaries. It is from "The Vine," the Funk family's newsletter.
