Youth in Mission in Latin America: Interview with the Rev. Joyce Torres
The Rev. Joyce Torres currently serves as

CIEMAL in 1998 as the first director of its
Youth in Mission program. In this interview with
Victoria Furio, she firmly commits to the belief
that young people are the lifeblood of the
church and that, working together, they really

Holy Week in Haiti
It was Tuesday morning. Since Palm Sunday I
have been experiencing Holy Week in a different
way from previous years. I have been preparing
for my first trip to Haiti, which is also my
first trip as Deputy General Secretary nominated
to lead the Mission and Evangelism Program of
Global Ministries. The trip to Haiti gave me a
special insight into Jesus' walk to the cross. I
saw His experience of death and resurrection re-
lived by the people of Haiti. I felt I was about
to meet Him again in the suffering of that
people.

Hallelujah Moment from the Dominican Republic A House of Blessing
As I neared the house, I could see lots of people
gathering around, trying to get in or at least
get close enough to be part of this house
blessing in the village of Bombita in the
Dominican Republic.
In the small dwelling, I sat and watched people
sing praises to God at the top of their lungs,
sweating up a storm due to the intense heat and
number of people crammed in the house. I was
moved by the depth of their faith.

A Case in Humanitarian Cooperation: Brazil and Dominican Republic
Last May, the Dominican Republic and Haiti were
devastated by heavy rain and flooding along the
border shared by the two nations on the island
of Hispaniola in the Caribbean. In the
Dominican Republic, the Rio Blanco overflowed,
and its strong currents destroyed property and
lives of many people in Jimani. The United
Methodist Church, through the General Board of
Global Ministries and the United Methodist
Committee on Relief, let the church and the
world know about the tragedy in both Haiti and
the Dominican Republic.

Holiday Season of Conscience -- End Child Labor Campaign
No one wants to purchase products made by
children, teenaged girls--or any workers--
stripped of their rights and forced to work long
hours in harsh sweatshop conditions under armed
guards for wages of 20-30¢ an hour. The people
of
the United States deserve the chance to raise
our
voices and affirm the dignity of life and human
rights over corporate indifference and greed.

Combining Sacramental life and Mission in the Dominican Republic
When the Rev. R. Randy Day, General Secretary of
the General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM)
says he loves children, and that baptism is his
favorite sacrament, he goes out of his way to
show it. Recently, following an eight-day trip
to Brazil where he observed the Brazilian
Methodist Church’s mission outreach in action,
he went to the Dominican Republic (DR), where,
first, he attended a mission-related meeting,
and then, he baptized a baby.
