Communities in Haiti find refuge under tents at a nearby basketball court.

It was Tuesday morning. Since Palm Sunday I have been experiencing Holy Week in a different way from previous years. I have been preparing for my first trip to Haiti, which is also my first trip as Deputy General Secretary nominated to lead the Mission and Evangelism Program of Global Ministries. The trip to Haiti gave me a special insight into Jesus' walk to the cross. I saw His experience of death and resurrection re- lived by the people of Haiti. I felt I was about to meet Him again in the suffering of that people.

 A House of Blessing

Connie and friends. Connie L. DiLeo serves as Project Director and Chaplain of Community Partners (COPA) in Barahona, Dominican Republic. The agency is a joint project of churches in the United States and Great Britain. As I neared the house, I could see lots of people gathering around, trying to get in or at least get close enough to be part of this house blessing in the village of Bombita in the Dominican Republic. In the small dwelling, I sat and watched people sing praises to God at the top of their lungs, sweating up a storm due to the intense heat and number of people crammed in the house. I was moved by the depth of their faith.

The Rev. Alejandro Figueroa, Executive Secretary of the Dominican Evangelical Church, in accepting the donation from church in Brazil wrote, “Thank you for your support and solidarity and for your ample understanding of what it means to be a neighbor.” Last May, the Dominican Republic and Haiti were devastated by heavy rain and flooding along the border shared by the two nations on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean. In the Dominican Republic, the Rio Blanco overflowed, and its strong currents destroyed property and lives of many people in Jimani. The United Methodist Church, through the General Board of Global Ministries and the United Methodist Committee on Relief, let the church and the world know about the tragedy in both Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
