The Rev. Joyce Torres currently serves as general secretary of the Council of Evangelical Methodist Churches in Latin America and the Caribbean (CIEMAL). She began her work with CIEMAL in 1998 as the first director of its Youth in Mission program. In this interview with Victoria Furio, she firmly commits to the belief that young people are the lifeblood of the church and that, working together, they really can--and do--transform the world.

United Methodist Volunteers in Mission team members work to expand the Methodist Church in Guanabacoa, Cuba.

New York, NY, March 31, 2009--A group of Protestant denominations and agencies have asked the Congress of the United States to lift the travel ban that severely limits their interactions with churches in Cuba. Signers include the General Boards of Church and Society and Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church.

A work team rebuilds a hurricane-damaged home in the Cuban province of Pinar del Rio. The United Methodist Committee on Relief has made some progress toward obtaining the U.S. Treasury Department licenses required to allow the denomination to assist hurricane survivors in Cuba, according to the Rev. Sam Dixon, head of UMCOR. Dixon reported on the progress Oct. 15 to the relief agency's board of directors, meeting in Stamford, Conn. The United Methodist Committee on Relief has made some progress toward obtaining the U.S. Treasury Department licenses required to allow the denomination to assist hurricane survivors in Cuba.

“Laying on hands” has a special meaning for the people who are deaf-blind and can experience God through touching the hands of someone who is interpreting into sign language. Every Sunday, about six people have the Sunday worship service placed in their hands like this at the United Methodist Christ Church for the Deaf in Baltimore, Maryland.

Louisiana native and United Methodist News Service reporter Kathy Gilbert was on assignment in Liberia when Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast. Upon learning where she was from, the children of Reeves Memorial United Methodist Church in Monrovia presented Gilbert with a $20 donation "to help the children of Louisiana."

UMCOR Emergency Response United Methodists have pulled out the stops with overwhelmingly generous donations to UMCOR's urgent appeal to assist tens of thousands of earthquake and tsunami survivors in South and Southeast Asia. The Souper Bowl of Caring, a youth-led international event that happens the first weekend in February. Twenty families in Santa Fe, a small fishing town at the west edge of Havana, Cuba, have new housing and another 100 received upgraded water service as an UMCOR project concluded in early December 2004.
