The Story of a Congolese Family Orphaned by AIDS
Sylvie Ngiaye, now 22, was only 16 years old when
her father died from AIDS-related symptoms. Her
mother, also infected with the virus at the time,
was too weak to care for the family. Since there
was no one else to care for her two younger
brothers, and since the Democratic Republic of
Congo has no social welfare system, Sylvie had to
drop out of school to provide for her family. "It
was too overwhelming for me. . . . I became
pregnant by design to force my boyfriend to help
take care of my family," said Sylvie.

Abuses by Congolese Rebels and Rwandan Soldiers in Eastern Congo
Congolese rebels and Rwandan soldiers are raping
and perpetrating massacres of Congolese civilians,
according to a new report by the U.S.-based Human
Rights Watch. RCD (French acronym for Rally for
Democracy) rebels and their allies often justify
such atrocities as "unintended consequences of
combat . . . but they seem in many cases to have
committed the abuses deliberately to punish
civilians for their supposed support of the
enemies of the RCD," says the report.

Congolese Religious Leaders' Position on the War
We, the religious leaders in the Democratic
Republic of the Congo--including representatives
of the Roman Catholic Church, the Church of Christ
in Congo (a union of 62 Protestant denominations),
the Kimbanguist Church (the largest independent
church in the country), the Orthodox Church, and
the Islamic Community--are deeply saddened by the
war that has been going on in our country since
August 2, 1998. This war has had devastating
consequences for the Congolese people, for the
future of our nation, and for our relationships
with our neighbors and friends.
