arrow icon. The Imagine No Malaria Campaign and Why It Just Might Work
Residents of Kamina, D.R. Congo, clean an irrigation canal as part of an effort to destroy breeding grounds of malaria-carrying mosquitoes. The project, sponsored by the UMC, is part of a larger effort to control the disease, which kills more than a million people per year.

Before 1960, when the Democratic Republic of the Congo was still under Belgian rule, an interwoven series of canals crisscrossed the countryside. The canals carried storm water away from the villages to the rivers, keeping standing water at a minimum. This gave mosquitoes little chance to breed in and around the villages where the Belgian administrators lived.

"Healthy I am only when my family is also well and healthy," said a teacher in Malawi. "I am healthy only when I am at peace with my fellow human beings and with creation," she continued. "I am healthy when my relationship with God is right. Being healthy means physical and spiritual well-being." I think this teacher is right, so I ask myself: "How healthy am I by her criteria?" How healthy are my colleagues? How healthy are our families...our congregations...The United Methodist Church...our world?
