Turning the World Upside Down Through Living Justice
In the theater of life, are we protagonists? Or
are we spectators?
This question was asked of the diverse group
attending the Living Justice seminar, a five-day
immersion experience offered by the Office of
Deaconess and Home Missioner. The 12 young women
and one man came from a variety of life
experiences and hometowns to question themselves
and one another at the Church Center for the
United Nations in New York City. The overall
topic, "Poverty: Community, Life and Land,"
focused on how poverty and land rights are
connected.

Return to the Earth
When Abraham, with his Chosen People, was
traveling to the Promised Land, his wife Sarah
died while they were in the land of the Hittites.
Abraham sought to bury his wife and asked the
Hittites if he could purchase a piece of ground.
They offered to give him land, but Abraham
insisted on purchasing it. The owner, a Hittite,
allowed Abraham to purchase land so he could bury
Sarah. (Genesis 23:19-20)

General Conference Celebrates the Dissolution of the Central Jurisdiction
Within the legislative rhetoric necessary to
create one Methodist Church in 1939 from the
three denominations that had splintered before
the nation's Civil War, that direct statement
was never made, but skin color was the only
basis for setting aside all the congregations of
color that made up the Central Jurisdiction.
Everyone at the 1939 uniting conference knew
that.
