A work team rebuilds a hurricane-damaged home in the Cuban province of Pinar del Rio. The United Methodist Committee on Relief has made some progress toward obtaining the U.S. Treasury Department licenses required to allow the denomination to assist hurricane survivors in Cuba, according to the Rev. Sam Dixon, head of UMCOR. Dixon reported on the progress Oct. 15 to the relief agency's board of directors, meeting in Stamford, Conn. The United Methodist Committee on Relief has made some progress toward obtaining the U.S. Treasury Department licenses required to allow the denomination to assist hurricane survivors in Cuba.

A desire to shift more decision-making about mission in Latin America to Methodist churches in the region has led to the successful development of a permanent fund to support projects in those countries. The Encounter with Christ in Latin America and the Caribbean Permanent Fund, administered by the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, uses the interest from nearly $1.5 million in principal to finance the projects.

The episcopal term of Methodist Bishop Juan A. Vera Méndez of Puerto Rico has been extended an additional period of three years through Dec. 31, 2009. The action was taken during a special session of the General Conference of the Methodist Church of Puerto Rico in April. About 83 percent of the ministerial and lay delegates approved the recommendation of the church's episcopacy and superintendency committee.

United Methodists need to have stronger connections with independent Methodist churches in Latin America and the Caribbean. That’s the premise underlying a special committee created by the 2004 United Methodist General Conference to study the denomination’s relationship with autonomous churches in the region. Bishop Minerva Carcaño of Phoenix is the committee chairperson.

UMCOR Emergency Response Civil unrest in Haiti has led United Methodist Volunteers in Mission to cancel all summer mission trips to Haiti. Heavy spring rains in the Highwood Mountains of north-central Montana destroyed bridges in the area. Northern Chile was rocked by a powerful earthquake last week. Food shortages from the lack of rain, locust infestations, and a breakdown of civil infrastructures are causing famines in southern, western, and eastern African nations.

UMCOR Emergency Response In Armenia, UMCOR needs to purchase about 75 tons of cheese. An unprecedented amount of health and school kits are requested for this year. The Methodist Church of Haiti provides hot lunches to children in 93 schools through the Methodist school system. At the end of 2003 there were nearly 12 million refugees in the world.

A denominational committee, tasked with raising $8 million for the United Methodist Church Global AIDS Fund over the next four years, has made prevention of mother-to-child HIV/AIDS transmission a priority.

UMCOR directors have approved $1.5 million for start-up and program implementation costs on the Caribbean island. Although United Methodists have worked in Haiti for years - particularly through the Methodist Church in Haiti - this is the first time UMCOR has undertaken the legal process of registering as a nongovernmental organization there, according to Marc Maxi, UMCOR's regional director for Africa and the Caribbean.

A $2 million United Methodist relief investment will assist residents of Haiti and Grenada to rebuild and repair homes and revive economies after hurricanes devastated both islands in September 2004. The board of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) meeting here, approved the project proposals. The new operations will augment $288,000 in emergency aid already dispatched to the island nations following Tropical Storm Jeanne and Hurricane Ivan.

UMCOR Emergency Response In New Jersey, volunteers are cleaning up with 400 UMCOR flood buckets sent from Mission Central in Pennsylvania. UMCOR is part of an ecumenical coalition that rushed emergency aid to the island of Nias in the Indian Ocean. UMCOR is putting out an urgent call for health kits. UMCOR is at work in Haiti, where nearly 30,000 have remained homeless since Hurricane Jeanne's thrashing, and Grenada, where Hurricane Ivan's winds destroyed 90 percent of buildings and virtually all its agriculture.

When Hurricane Jeanne struck the Dominican Republic last September, the resulting damage affected some 1,600 cocoa farmers. Those farmers – or producers, are part of the United Methodist Committee on Relief's coffee project. The project encourages people to buy "fair trade" items such as coffee, tea, cocoa and chocolate.
