missionary.

New York, NY, September 17, 2009--The United Methodist Church in Cameroon, West Africa, has a bright future, but just how bright depends upon the strength of the network of mission partnerships required to sustain a young Christian community. This is especially true in a multilingual country with a great variety of religious options.

He lives near the site of our new church, was passing by, and sat down to listen. He lives near the site of our new church, was passing by, and sat down to listen.” What is involved in making mission contextual? As a first step, we must put away our suitcase full of answers and instead fill it with questions like: How? What? When? Where?

 Toward an Economy of Caring

In the marketplace Yaounde, Cameroon, entrepreneurship is undertaken by women - often primary family providers - who sell produce that they have planted and harvested. After two hours’ travel on a hilly dirt road in the Northwest Province of Cameroon, West Africa, the narrow valley opens on a vast hillside of young palm-oil trees. Women of all ages work together in this remote area, caring for their young children and babies among them and cultivating these trees that contain hope for their families’ future.

Advent is A Time of Joy

Joy! Can you manufacture joy? Is it possible to force someone to be joyful? If not, nobody told the Psalmist! He outright commands people to be joyful throughout much of his book of songs and psalms. Psalm 100, for example, reads, “Shout for joy to the Lord!”

The young people who got off the bus at the beach town, Kribi, at the start of Holy Week 2005 were mostly strangers to one another. Climbing back on to head home for Easter at week's end, they were closely knit United Methodist youths, all holding Bibles received as participants in the first national youth camp of the new United Methodist Church in Cameroon.

UMCOR Emergency Response Providing employment for the area's fisher folk who lost their livelihoods in the tsunami was just one of the many reasons UMCOR started the beach clearing project in Sri Lanka. UMCOR is helping to contain the Marburg virus with a grant to train 40 women and men on prevention in their communities. UMCOR is also helping The United Methodist Church in the Cameroon respond to the cholera pandemic there. Food shortages from both the lack of rain and breakdown of civil infrastructures are causing famines in southern and eastern African nations.

Ferdinand and Eugenie Boula with their family in First UMC, Douala. My family and I used to attend a very small Evangelical church. This independent church was the work of a courageous and talented young pastor. It was in this church that my wife and I and our children were baptized. I live in Bonaberi, in the 4th Division in the city of Douala, Cameroon. Douala is the economic heart of the country, and its port is the main port of entry for goods entering and leaving Cameroon. It is also used by neighboring countries, such as the Republic of Chad and the Central African Republic.

A member of N’Chang United Methodist Church, one of the emerging congregations in the Cameroon. I flew from Pensacola, Florida, to Atlanta, Georgia, to New York, New York, to Paris, France; then across the Mediterranean; over Algeria, the Sahara, and Nigeria; and finally landed in Yaounde, Cameroon, in Central Africa. We went through customs and met our hosts, United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries’ (GBGM) missionaries Bill and Grace Warnock, along with several young pastors, and were then greeted in the parking lot by the youth choir from Yaounde First United Methodist Church.

arrow icon. A New Mission in Cameroon
French-speaking pastors’school conference attendees in Cameroon with David Wu, GBGM assistant general secretary, Congregational Initiatives, Evangelization and Church Growth. Cameroon, on the west coast of Africa, comprises northern hills, central plateau, and southern tropical rain forest and is the prehistoric birthplace and original homeland of the Bantu ethnic group, which migrated east and south 1000 B.C. to about the 4th century A.D. Today, Swahili is the most widely spoken language of the Bantu group. The word “Cameroon” was coined by Portuguese explorer Fernando Po, who named the river Camerones because he was astounded by the large quantities of giant shrimp (cumarões, in Portuguese) that swarmed at its mouth.
