New York, Oct. 1 - The immediacy of global e-mail
can bring instant good news and joy from around
the world. It can also bring chilling news of
death and destruction. Such was the news the
General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM) received
today.

Interview with Bishop J. Alfred Ndoricimpa East Africa Annual Conference
I came to Kenya after the military assassination
of the first democratically elected president in
Burundi. Since in my role as Bishop I also served
as the spiritual adviser to the president, I was
warned by many in my own country to leave because
my life was in danger. I first moved here in March
1994 and when it became evident that I would not
be safe in Burundi, I stayed for good in August 1994.

United Methodist Church Assists Refugees in Kenya
Ask Esperance Munenzero how it feels to be a
refugee, and the 19-year-old United Methodist from
Burundi, now living in Nairobi, says, "Life is
very difficult when you live in exile. Our morale
is low, we are in financial difficulty, and we
live in constant fear that those people whom we
ran away from may come to this country and kill us."

Rwandan Children Now Thrive in United Methodist Tent Village
When he was greeted recently by healthy Rwandan
refugee children at a camp in Zaire, United
Methodist Bishop Felton E. May of Harrisburg,
Pa., was full of emotion.
"The last children I saw in Goma were near
death," said May, who was there Jan. 8 to
dedicate a "children's village" for orphans. "To
return 17 months later and see the village in
operation -- 10 Quonset-like tents arranged like
a college campus -- was like a miracle."
