In Mission Together Uses New Media to Connect People
I sent Patrick Friday an email, suggesting
that
we meet for breakfast in the cafeteria for a
conversation about social media and mission.
Patrick suggested, instead, we should chat, pray,
and invite others to join us at a Google+ "hang
out."
A couple of emails later, Patrick and I logged on
to Google+ for our "hang out," a four-way
videoconference with Patti Bacher in De Pere,
Wisconsin, and Mi Rhang Baek in Madison,
Alabama.

Bulgaria
For the United Methodist Church in Bulgaria, a
stolen church bell has come to symbolize God’s
covenant with a faithful people. The Methodist
Church in Varna was founded in 1885 by Trico
Constantine, who held Bulgarian and American
citizenship. He was a member of the Minnesota
Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In
1892, the Baltimore Conference sent a steeple
bell to the Varna church for the dedication of
its new building. By 1915, the building had to
be enlarged to accommodate the growing
congregation.

European Methodists find common ground at festival
At first glance, it may be hard to imagine that
European Methodists have met together in large
numbers only twice: once during the Cold War and
then again this summer. But considering
everything that has conspired to keep them
apart - differences in language, history,
culture, church structure and geography, and
even politically fraught visa application
processes - one begins to appreciate what an
achievement the July 30-Aug. 3 European
Methodist Festival really is.

Eastern European Churches in the 21st Century
The dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 sent
far-reaching ripples across Asia and Eastern
Europe. Even before Mikhail Gorbachev stepped
down and Boris Yeltsin became Russia’s
democratically elected president, the Communist
regimes of Hungary, Bulgaria, and Czechoslovakia
dissolved under pressure from popular movements
encouraged by the fall of the Berlin Wall in
1989.
