For about two weeks leading up to their sending forth or commissioning on October 12th, 2010, the missionaries spent their days in workshops taught by Global Ministries' missionaries, staff, consultants, and each other.

Mission across ethnic, cultural, geographical, and religious lines is becoming common in the area of outreach. Recent trends in missionary service reflect a greater awareness and respect for cultural context, simple living, communication, and diversity. These trends may seem forward-looking, yet the changing tides of missionary service refer back to the past and to the life of Jesus Christ.

arrow icon. Hallelujah Moment: Shade and Fresh Water Project
Children are the number one priority of the Shade and Fresh Water Project. SHADE AND FRESH WATER is a popular Brazilian expression that transmits a desire to find a place that provides for protection from life’s harsh realities. One of those harsh realities is that the Brazilian family is in crisis. Millions of parents must rise very early in the morning to hurry off to work in an ongoing struggle to provide for their families.

A liturgical dancer welcomes the 9th Assembly of the World Council of Churches to Porto Alegre, Brazil. The 9th Assembly of the World Council of Churches that met in Porto Alegre, Brazil, February 14-23, 2006, hardly seemed like the place to engage in discussions about building houses. Through the cooperative effort of Habitat for Humanity in Brazil, the National Council of Churches of the USA; the Methodist, Lutheran, and Roman Catholic churches of Porto Alegre; and other ecumenical and nongovernmental partners, the dream of 100 new homes for the very poorest in Porto Alegre is about to come true.

It is a must.

Catherine Weber Reasoner and Albert James Reasoner celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2005. My father dedicated his whole life to mission. He grew up in Brazil as a missionary kid and later returned to serve as a missionary. In May of this year, my father went back to Brazil to visit. About halfway through his visits, he was in a serious car accident. He died three weeks later due to complications from his injuries. We buried him in Brazil-the place where his heart had always been.

 March 19, 2006

In Brazil we have a saying: “God writes correctly with crooked lines.” That certainly illustrates my life! When I was 8 years old, I told my mother I was going to Brazil. At 13 I tried to learn Portuguese. I still have a booklet I received from the Brazilian Embassy when I was a teenager. Even before I met my wife Teca—who was born in Brazil—I wrote in my diary: “I need to go to Brazil to be in touch with my true self.”
