UMCOR Hotline, August 2, 2005
The death of newly-elected vice president, Dr.
John Garang has raised new concerns regarding
the recent peace accord between northern and
southern Sudan. A member of the southern Dinka
ethnic group, Garang was a key player in the
peace agreement that was forged last month. "Let
us pray that the peace accord will be respected
despite this great tragedy," said the Rev. R.
Randy Day, chief executive of the General Board
of Global Ministries. UMCOR program activities
are located in Darfur, in the western portion of
Sudan.

UMCOR Hotline, April 5, 2005
UMCOR last week joined an ecumenical coalition
rushing emergency aid to the island of Nias, hard
hit by a powerful earthquake. Tornadoes tore
through several south Georgia towns in late
March. UMCOR field offices have requested nearly
193,000 health kits for distribution in 2005 -
more than UMCOR has ever shipped before. Gornji
Vakuf-Uskoplje teens who grew up in a divided
community are enjoying drama courses, an Internet
club, library, art workshops, and other
activities that encourage tolerance and peace
building.

UMCOR Readies Start-up Operations in Sri Lanka, Indonesia
Guy Hovey was in Sarajevo, Bosnia, during the
siege of that city, and he witnessed in Northern
Iraq how Saddam Hussein's efforts at ethnic
cleansing wiped away entire villages. But Hovey -
who directs operations for Europe and Asia for
the United Methodist Committee on Relief - was
unprepared for the magnitude of the devastation
he found in Sri Lanka after the Dec. 26 tsunami.

United Methodist volunteers see war's effects in Bosnia
Working in a small Bosnian village, a group of
United Methodist volunteers got a firsthand
glimpse this summer of the long-term effects of
war.
Despite the village's ruined buildings, lack of
electricity and running water, and dire economic
situation, the nine-member team from East Avenue
United Methodist Church in Norwalk, Conn., was
able to look beyond the devastation.

All I Want for Christmas Is-- A Toothbrush, Some Pencils, a Baby Blanket, Needles and Thread
If you are looking for meaningful ways to
celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, UMCOR's
Material Resource Ministry offers several
opportunities. You can give a desperately needed
gift, like a health kit, to someone in a war-torn
country, someone who has been displaced from
their home, someone who has no home but the city
streets or a tent in a refugee camp, or someone
who lives in poverty. Thousands of people will be
thrilled to receive a new toothbrush, some
notebook paper, fabric for a skirt, or a
receiving blanket for their new baby

Serbia & Montenegro/Macedonia
Methodism came to Yugoslavia by way of a monthly
news magazine published in German by German-
speaking Methodists in the United States.
Because of a magazine article, a group in Backa
(Vojvodina) discovered that there was a
Methodist congregation in Vienna, Austria. They
were drawn to the denomination because of a
common interest in temperance. They invited the
Vienna pastor to Backa in 1897, and thus the
church was born, despite the fact that the new
religion was soon persecuted and its newly
appointed pastor imprisoned.

The General Secretary of the General Board of

agency’s “firm commitment” to the assignment of
new missionaries and to the support of
missionaries already in service.
In his semi-annual report to the Board’s
directors, the Rev. R. Randy Day said that he
expected new young adult missionaries and new
deaconesses to be commissioned in 2004. He
indicated that the Board will achieve a
sustainable level of mission personnel by 2005.

Religious Dialogue in a Changing World
A common phrase these days is “the world changed
on September 11th.” Religious polarization
manifested itself in a horrific loss of life in
the World Trade Center attack. Many people are
now asking how we can bring Islam and
Christianity together to create understanding
and mutual respect over a perceived cultural and
religious divide to prevent further bloodshed
and escalating violence.

UMCOR / Bosnia and Herzegovina Program Description
UMCOR-NGO began relief work in Zenica, Bosnia
and Herzegovina in 1993. Since its inception, the
UMCOR/BiH mission has grown to include
approximately 20 active projects throughout the
country. The Bosnia mission's operations are
based in Sarajevo with sub-field offices in Banja
Luka, Kupres, Mostar, Travnik, Trebinje, and
Zenica. In mid-1996, as the needs of the war-
affected populations of the Former Yugoslavia
changed, UMCOR/BiH made the transition from
emergency relief programmes to those aimed at
spanning the transition from relief to
development.
