Mande Muyombo is the oldest of 16 siblings; his father earned the equivalent of 30 dollars a month. The scholarship Rev. Muyombo received from Global Ministries to attend Africa University made all the difference in the world to him. The education set Rev. Muyombo on a path to becoming the leader he is within The United Methodist Church.

A few years ago, Pastor Mike Slaughter of the Ginghamsburg United Methodist Church in Tipp City, Ohio, challenged the congregation to remember in their gift-making that Christmas celebrates Jesus' birthday. "What we need is not more words, but action!" proclaimed Bishop Kainda Katembo, episcopal leader for the South Congo Episcopal Area, as he spoke some years ago about the AIDS crisis in Africa. Thankfully, United Methodists heard that plea and have been responding in profound ways.
