The directors and staff of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries are in fervent prayer for the safety and quick release of the group of Korean Christian volunteers being held by the Taliban in the Qarabagh District in Afghanistan. We are also remembering the family and the congregation of the Rev. Bae Hyung-kyu, a young Presbyterian pastor from Bundang, who has already been shot by the captors.

October 10, 2005, NEW YORK— The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is responding to the most powerful earthquake to strike South Asia in a century. At least 20,000 people are assumed dead and twice as many are injured. Up to 4 million could be homeless in the mountainous region of Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, just as the cold winter months approach.

A powerful earthquake, centered in northern Pakistan, on Oct. 8 2005, sent tremors eastward across India and as far west as Afghanistan. The quake leveled whole cities in Kashmir and shook and destroyed highrises, homes, and schools in many parts of the region.

Silent vigil Where do the bombs and guns and tanks stand among these words: blessed are  the meek, blessed are the merciful, blessed are the peacemakers?  And what does this sermon mean in light of the widespread practice of torturing enemies that seems to have been engaged in and sanctioned  by representatives of our country?

A United Methodist Women member wrote to the Women's Division, asking that the organization take leadership in addressing the issue of United States- sanctioned torture. Torture has occurred in Iraqi and Afghanistan prisons and through the "outsourcing" of prisoners, who are allegedly terrorists, to countries known for torture in interrogation and prisons.
