Breaking the Cycle of Malaria and Poverty
Malaria kills. It kills a child every 30 seconds
in sub-Saharan Africa, and those that die are
disproportionately poor. The anopheles mosquito
that spreads this deadly, but preventable,
illness does not distinguish between rich and
poor. But the difference between life and death
often depends on one's environment and ability
to
get treatment very soon after falling ill.

Native Heritage, Christian Faith Bring Conflict
Two little girls who wanted to come to church
have helped Jennifer Battiest come to terms
with her anger over how the church has treated
Native Americans. The daughter of two United
Methodist pastors – Samuel, a Choctaw from
Oklahoma, and Margaret, a Choctaw from
Mississippi – Battiest said she has long had
conflicted feelings about her Christian
connections, even as she has embraced a
calling from God.

The Stone Moves Another Inch: Good Friday, April 10, 2009
I work in a United Methodist Mission Institute
that houses a food pantry. One day in the lobby
of our food pantry, I was handing out
newsletters
to people after they got their bag of groceries.
I watched the clients talking with each other as
they gathered up their belongings. One couple
said, "We're living out of our car right now."

Second-Hand Recovery
You never think the worst will happen to you,
but
sometimes it does, and you have to learn whether
to give up or move on. I was daddy's girl. My
dad
passed away when I was ten because his body
could
no longer handle his addiction to alcohol. He
suffered liver failure and a heart attack. This
past February I lost my grandfather to the same
disease.
