School children in Lekki, Nigeria, peform a skit promoting the effectiveness of mosquito nets in preventing malaria. Malaria kills. It kills a child every 30 seconds in sub-Saharan Africa, and those that die are disproportionately poor. The anopheles mosquito that spreads this deadly, but preventable, illness does not distinguish between rich and poor. But the difference between life and death often depends on one's environment and ability to get treatment very soon after falling ill.

Dominic Ding was a lost boy from Sudan. He will be one of many refugees to tell their personal stories at an awareness event. Most Americans do not understand the complexities of being a refugee. To help educate those in the Western NY Conference, Trinity United Methodist Church on Grand Island is hosting a World Refugee Day event for youth groups on Saturday, June 20.

Debbie Umipig-Julian with Mustafa, Eva, and their children, KC, and Zilan. Mustafa wandered through the mountains for a long time and finally had to flee his home country in order to preserve his life after he quit a militant group. A Kurd from Turkey, Mustafa ended up in Japan where he met Eva, a Filipina working in the entertainment industry.

Jennifer Battiest is a Global Ministries missionary serving the Clinton Indian United Methodist Church in Oklahoma. Two little girls who wanted to come to church have helped Jennifer Battiest come to terms with her anger over how the church has treated Native Americans. The daughter of two United Methodist pastors – Samuel, a Choctaw from Oklahoma, and Margaret, a Choctaw from Mississippi – Battiest said she has long had conflicted feelings about her Christian connections, even as she has embraced a calling from God.

I work in a United Methodist Mission Institute that houses a food pantry. One day in the lobby of our food pantry, I was handing out newsletters to people after they got their bag of groceries. I watched the clients talking with each other as they gathered up their belongings. One couple said, "We're living out of our car right now."

Maudelyn (left), shown with Alston (right), from Tobago, found JFON at Wesley UMC after she lost thousands of dollars to an unscrupulous lawyer. When Pastor Pauline Wardell-Sankoh came to John Wesley United Methodist Church in 2000, she did not realize the extent of passion for immigration justice that had begun to take root a year earlier. The church, with a membership of about 200, is located in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn.

A work team rebuilds a hurricane-damaged home in the Cuban province of Pinar del Rio. The United Methodist Committee on Relief has made some progress toward obtaining the U.S. Treasury Department licenses required to allow the denomination to assist hurricane survivors in Cuba, according to the Rev. Sam Dixon, head of UMCOR. Dixon reported on the progress Oct. 15 to the relief agency's board of directors, meeting in Stamford, Conn. The United Methodist Committee on Relief has made some progress toward obtaining the U.S. Treasury Department licenses required to allow the denomination to assist hurricane survivors in Cuba.

You never think the worst will happen to you, but sometimes it does, and you have to learn whether to give up or move on. I was daddy's girl. My dad passed away when I was ten because his body could no longer handle his addiction to alcohol. He suffered liver failure and a heart attack. This past February I lost my grandfather to the same disease.
