Walter Reitz Child Development Center, Panama Almost everyone asks when the bridge will be built. Washed out years ago in a torrent of rain, not uncommon in the Caribbean, the indigenous people must bring their wares to market by pulling themselves by rope in a basket, one or two at a time across the Rio San Juan.

"Christmas is a time to share with family." Our ears, thoughts, and hearts are so full of such words that we believe that without family there can be no Christmas. For those who can't physically be with our families, Christmas can be a time of sorrow instead of rejoicing.

The body of Christ may seem small in Japan—1.13 million or just 1 percent of the total population of more than 127 million people, but Christian ministry is widespread and diverse. Christians are especially influential in education, welfare, human rights and peace advocacy.

Two years ago Ted walked across a cleared minefield in Mozambique. Today this location is home to a large professional school with 1,200 students learning skills such as welding, plumbing and electronics. The people in this community have new opportunities for success. The land mines in this area have been totally removed.

Sixteen years ago, the Democratic Republic of Congo initiated an evangelism project to develop The United Methodist Church in Tanzania, a country dominated by Catholics and Muslims and plagued by extreme poverty. I was invited to go as a missionary, and a lifelong dream was fulfilled.

One winter night I opened my home to a woman I’ll call “Natalie” and her 2-year-old daughter. Fleeing an abusive situation, Natalie had suffered some superficial cuts, but her psychological wounds ran much deeper. I prepared a meal for my guests and listened to the woman all night.

Florence and Julianna, refugees from Ghana, found themselves in Senegal. When The United Methodist Church opened its doors in Grand Yoff in 1999, they attended the first service. The women became members of the Micro Credit Association, funded by the Economic Empowerment Program of The United Methodist Church in Senegal.

For more than three decades I worked as a hospital pharmacist in Birmingham, Ala. In 1989 I took some “vacation” time to join a Volunteers-in-Mission (VIM) team that went to Rio Colorado, Bolivia. Our assignment was to work with Bob and Rosa Caufield to build a boys’ dormitory at a Methodist high school deep in the jungle. It was my first mission experience, and it changed my life. At the time, however, I had no idea to what extent.

I haven’t always been a United Methodist. When I was 18, I attended a Methodist church in Mexico and decided to accept God’s grace. I felt secure knowing God was in my life. My response to God’s call to ordination was a gradual process that began with an indigenous child with whom I tried to minister.

When you are a missionary, every day is different from the day before. Whether God calls you to work with prisoners, reach out to persons affected by HIV/AIDS, teach preschoolers or serve a congregation as pastor, you’ll soon discover: Mission is relational. It’s about people, both young and old, and it’s about trying to pour your heart and soul into ministry.

I applied to be a US-2 because I wanted to participate in ministries that would further God’s reign of love, peace, mercy and justice. In my first placement, I rocked babies and read with children. That was not unusual: Most US-2s work in after-school programs, homeless shelters, food banks and other such agencies. I was surprised when I was told my new assignment would be as a campus ministry staff member at Southwestern College, a small United Methodist school in Winfield, Kan.

University students in many countries realize that, as heirs of a global world, it is essential to learn the English language. Missionaries who teach English prepare students to contribute to the society of the future. It is a challenge to design and develop new courses in English.

Shilaisan was an orphan who at age 23 married a man who was drafted into the Japanese army during their first year of marriage. He was killed in the Battle of Guadalcanal when their daughter was only 3 years old. As a young widow, Shilaisan provided for her daughter and adoptive family by making kimonos that were sold for profit. This improved her life financially, but a burden weighed on her heart.

My wife Rebecca and I grew up in the church. When I was 17 or 18, I struggled with God’s question: “Will you do whatever I ask you to do?” And I had trouble with that. What if God sent me to a place where I didn’t want to go or where I wouldn’t be happy? But I finally said, “OK; whatever you say, I’ll do.” I’ve never been disappointed.

Today I met a little girl whose father had earlier come to Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON) requesting assistance for his daughter. After reviewing the facts, I had been able to determine that she was eligible for citizenship. They came to thank us because she received her naturalization certificate. She is still in grade school but old enough to realize the importance of that piece of paper.

In “The Servant Song,” Richard Gillard writes: “Brother, let me serve you, let me be as Christ to you; pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant, too.” There is no doubt in my mind that being in mission is not about a special place of assignment but, rather, about an awareness of the opportunities to witness to God’s love through our lives—wherever we are—and to receive in those situations.

“Mary,” 3, who had been abandoned by her mother, looked longingly at the parcels. The older children beamed with excitement. They had been told their missionary friend was visiting them and the contents of the packages—children’s Bibles, clothing, healthy snacks, hygiene items, library books and school supplies—were for them.

When I was in my mid-50s, I underwent some major changes in my life. I came up with the notion of becoming a missionary, which shocked me and some of the people close to me. My profession was social work which did not seem that different from being a missionary.

Teaching systematic theology and Christian ethics for 15 years at an ecumenical college in northern Nigeria, I was able to concentrate research on Christian ethics and to complete a book on that subject. I considered that a way to answer God's call. During our 10 years at St. Paul's United Theological College in Limuru, Kenya, in addition to teaching, I felt led by the Spirit to focus on writing about systematic theology.
