Rev. William T. Carter

Little Rock, Arkansas, November 23, 2010--The Rev. William T. Carter, who led the designated mission-giving program of The United Methodist Church for 27 years, died in Little Rock, Arkansas on November 22. He was 68 years of age and had retired in 2006 after having headed the Advance for Christ and His Church since 1979.

Excitement continues to build as the 10-Fold campaign draws closer. 10-Fold, a 10-day interactive campaign to promote increased awareness, knowledge, and advocacy of mission, begins October 10. In addition to the educational element of 10-Fold, project sponsors have pledged to give $1 for each person who signs up as an advocate of a project during the campaign, up to a maximum of $10,000.

March 26, 2010, Plymouth, Michigan--Instead of breaking yolks, they decided to break yokes. Using materials provided by The Advance's B1 campaign, the youth of First United Methodist Church in Plymouth, Michigan, raised over $5,400 to give to the Kiev Street Children Ministry, Advance #14054A and to the Haiti Emergency Fund, Advance # 418325 in response to the January earthquake.

Despite devastation from civil war on the campus of the Gbarnga School of Theology in Monrovia, Liberia, the faculty immediately added counseling to its class offerings after peace was restored. B1 participants at a Salvation Army facility pray with a man. In 2007, Bishop Sudarshana Devadhar of the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference contacted The Advance office looking for a new way to connect the youth of Greater New Jersey Annual Conference to The Advance, the denomination's giving channel dedicated to mission. Two years later, the response to the bishop's request can be symbolized by a letter and number, "B1."

Kusayapu Graduates 2006 Iquique, Chile, September 18, 2008--The board of directors of Methodist Extension to Andean Youth (EMANA) in Chile is reopening Instituto Kusayapu, a boarding school in the Pueblo of Pachica. The institution was closed for two years while options for its future were considered.
