 Where It All Began

Bishop John R. Schol of the Baltimore-Washington Annual (regional) Conference spoke at an April 25 reception honoring the Shalom Zone initiative of the Theological School of Drew University. Schol is the convener of the National Shalom Committee. The United Methodist Communities of Shalom initiative returned to General Conference, where it was born in 1992 as a ministry of community reconciliation and development.

arrow icon. Mission Agency Continues Its Work  On Child Abuse Allegations and Policy
A retired United Methodist bishop and two professors in the field of medical care make up an independent panel that will receive and assess reports on alleged child abuse at a denominational mission facility in Africa a generation ago. The General Board of Global Ministries, the international mission agency of the denomination, is also drafting specific guidelines on child and sexual abuse for all of its employees and mission personnel, based upon a policy adopted in mid-April by the board’s directors, meeting in Stamford, CT.

arrow icon. Scholar proposes Abyssinian model for Christian-Muslim relations 
Muslim theologian Dr. Farid Esack proposed reviving the Abyssinian paradigm as a way to move forward with Muslim-Christian relations at a recent General Board of Global Ministries Staff Briefing. In the early stage of Islam, followers of the new religion experienced such great persecution in Mecca that the Prophet Muhammad advised them to move to Abyssinia (Ethiopia). The Christian king of Abyssinia received them with sympathy, and for several years Muslims lived with their Christian neighbors in peace.

In the previous structure of the General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM), Mr. Grund reported, 30 to 50 new missionaries were commissioned each year and 60 to 80 missionaries retired. This decline in the overall number of missionaries sparked the GBGM to revitalize the Mission Personnel Program Area. As a result, in 1999, 199 new mission personnel were commissioned.
