Mission Agency Continues Its Work On Child Abuse Allegations and Policy
A retired United Methodist bishop and two
professors in the field of medical care make up
an independent panel that will receive and
assess reports on alleged child abuse at a
denominational mission facility in Africa a
generation ago.
The General Board of Global Ministries, the
international mission agency of the
denomination, is also drafting specific
guidelines on child and sexual abuse for all of
its employees and mission personnel, based upon
a policy adopted in mid-April by the board’s
directors, meeting in Stamford, CT.

Scholar proposes Abyssinian model for Christian-Muslim relations
In the early stage of Islam, followers of the new
religion experienced such great persecution in
Mecca that the Prophet Muhammad advised them to
move to Abyssinia (Ethiopia). The Christian king
of Abyssinia received them with sympathy, and for
several years Muslims lived with their Christian
neighbors in peace.

10-10-10: New Mission Initiatives for the 21st Century
In the previous structure of the General Board of
Global Ministries (GBGM), Mr. Grund reported, 30
to 50 new missionaries were commissioned each
year and 60 to 80 missionaries retired. This
decline in the overall number of missionaries
sparked the GBGM to revitalize the Mission
Personnel Program Area. As a result, in 1999, 199
new mission personnel were commissioned.

Mongolia - GBGM Staff Briefing Summary
Dr. David Wu began the briefing by discussing the
common perception of Mongolia as "the end of the
earth," which perfectly fits Christ's injunction
to his disciples, "You shall be my witness in
Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the end of the
earth." (Acts 1:8) A United Methodist mission in
Mongolia, approved by the cabinet, brings the
Gospel of Christ to the ancient land of Genghis
Khan.
