arrow icon. The Faces of Clean Water in Nicaragua
The traditional way of collecting water in Nicaragua requires women and children to walk for miles to a stream or river to fill containers to carry home.

For untold years, women and children in Las Mesas, Nicaragua, walked two miles each way to get water. Grandmothers, mothers, and children made this trip several times a day, every day-- walking in flimsy flip-flops across sharp rocks and hard-baked soil. They were going to fetch 5- gallon buckets of water, each filled bucket weighing 40 pounds.

arrow icon. Inspiration from Nicaragua

Several years ago, I served as a Global Justice Volunteer in Nicaragua. It remains one of the most humbling experiences of my life. I lived and worked for eight weeks with the people of Alamikambang, Nicaragua, in what seemed to be the middle of nowhere. As I reflect on this verse, I am reminded of these inspiring people who are faithful enough to cling to the love of God in everything that they do.

Encountering God in the Midst of a Crisis

Women and children unload food for their community Each day I am challenged to live out my faith. I arrived in Waspam, Nicaragua in October 2007, about a month after Hurricane Felix hit. This community of 6,000 people is on the Coco River, which forms the border of southern Honduras and northern Nicaragua. Most residents are Miskito, an indigenous people who have populated the region for centuries.

 Global Justice Volunteers

Global Justice Volunteers Nikki Bell and Nick Basinger immersed in the Nicaraguan culture. "Do you have poverty like this in the United States?" Angel, a young Nicaraguan man, asked Nikki. They were walking through an area of Nicaragua where children regularly drink murky water. Nikki began to wonder about access to clean water in the United States and in other parts of the world.

Global justice volunteers and their leaders at the GJV Africa 2000 orientation in Sierra Leone. “The Global Justice Volunteers format is designed to be a life-transforming process, not just a program with an ending point,” the Global Justice Volunteers material reads. “The young adult volunteer should carry the Global Justice Volunteer experiences into his or her current and future work.” For many young people who serve as GJVs globally, the expectation to carry the experience with them is not a choice. It is a must.

A young student in Nicaragua In 2005 Nicaragua celebrated the 25th anniversary of an historical event that caught the eye of the world and earned a United Nations award. From March to August of 1980, approximately 60,000 young people mobilized to the far reaches of Nicaragua to share their basic skills in reading and writing with campesino (poor farmer) families. The illiteracy rate dropped from 60% to 12% in just six months

Children and VIMs stand next to the mural of the new school. 'Los Ninos Son Nuestra Esperanza' (the children are our hope) Traveling the 80 kilometers between Managua and San Francisco Libre is a bumpy, dusty two hour drive when the road is good. In the rainy season it often becomes like quicksand and the municipality turns into an island.
