The following suggestions will help missionaries in Mozambique to use our donations more efficiently and effectively.
Often during the shipping process, items get separated. Machines may arrive missing directions, electric cords, or other attachments. EQUIPMENT IS USELESS WITHOUT A CORD!
Securely attach (tape) to the machine itself, the name of the equipment, its use, directions, electric cords, and attachments.
Electrical voltages vary from country to country. Before sending equipment, check the electrical voltage and cycles of the receiving country. If possible, send appropriate transformers so the equipment can be utilized. (The electricity in Mozambique is 220/50 cycle).
Do not send out-dated drugs. Some countries will not allow their use.
When re-packing sample medications into small bottles, condense those with the same expiration dates into fewer of the original bottles. When re-packing foil wrapped or blister-packed medications, remove them from the box and pack (unopened) in zipper-type plastic bags (these are an added bonus overseas). Be sure to enclose the portion of the box that contains the name of the medication, the lot number, and the expiration date. Enclose 2-3 package inserts. The "unit-dose" packaging will protect the medication from moisture.
Save cotton and use it for packing (it has MANY uses overseas).
If possible, obtain a list of needed medications from the mission site and try to send those.
Some countries have a national formulary (a list of available drugs by categories). Many of our newer medications are not on this list and they do not know how to use them.
Anyone sending medications overseas may contact me for assistance. If the medication is going to Mozambique, I will give it a national formulary number.
