COMMUNITY SERVICE AND GLOBAL CITIZEN AWARD
APPLICATION PROCESS, 2003
NAMING OF THE AWARD
This Award honors Theressa Hoover for her service to the Women's Division, The United Methodist Church and the ecumenical world. Ms. Hoover was a staff member of the Division from 1948-1990; and for 22 years was its chief staff officer.
PURPOSE & CRITERIA
The Award will be given annually to a young woman (ages 21-35) without regard to race or nationality, who has:
+ demonstrated concern for her neighbors and community;
+ shown that concern in service to her community
+ exhibits an awareness of the total nature of our responsibilities in today's world.
USES OF THE AWARD
The grant is for informal study, exploration, learning, research or observation in a subject area of the recipients choosing in harmony with the current interests of the Women's Division. It is for travel to a country or region other than where the recipient resides.
The award is NOT intended as a scholarship for formal academic study; and is NOT for use as a grant to an already established project.
The emphasis is on experiential learning for the individual receiving the Award.
THE WOMEN'S DIVISION
The Women's Division is the national policy-making body for UNITED METHODIST WOMEN in The United Methodist Church, with a 130-year history of involvement with ministries to women and ministries to children. It is linked ecumenically with women's groups around the world. It has long been an advocate for social justice as it carries on a broad program of spiritual enrichment, leadership development and mission education.
Recipients of the Award will be invited to selected Division events; and will submit a written report on "findings and experiences" at the conclusion of the Project.
THE AWARD
The projected amount of the annual award will be $5,000-6,000. The amount will vary annually; and the exact amount to be determined in December 2002.
2003 APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS
1. All applications must be postmarked no later than August 1, 2002.

2. Applications will be screened by the Women's Division Staff Cabinet; all decisions are final. Preference will be given to lay applicants.
3. Applicants will be notified individually.
4. The recipient of the 2003 Award will be announced by the Deputy General Secretary during the October, 2002 Annual Meeting.
