UMCOR is sending food and medicine to assist victims of ongoing civil unrest in the Southern Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi. The violence in Angola continues to escalate and many Angolans have fled their homes and are living as refugees in Southern Congo. To join in relief efforts, please give to UMCOR's International Disaster Response #982450-8 and designate your gift, "Africa." UMCOR is in communication with missionaries and leaders of the United Methodist Church in the Philippines following the recent flooding and landslides. UMCOR is also in communication with missionaries in Nicaragua who are assessing the damage from the recent volcanic eruption. When relief efforts are determined, an update will be posted on the Hotline. UMCOR Disaster's Response staff person spoke with the disaster coordinator in Utah shortly after the tornado. Damage is being assessed. Your gifts to UMCOR's Domestic Disaster Response, #901670-1 enable UMCOR to respond to disasters within the United States. In light of the increase in shootings involving children as both victims and perpetrators, the Health and Welfare Unit of the General Board of Global Ministries is developing a program component on the issue of guns and children. One of the goals is to advocate for more stringent gun regulation. Bumper stickers are currently available and United Methodists are urged to raise awareness and advocate for gun regulation in their churches and communities. For more information, call the Health and Welfare Unit at (212) 870-3871. Please pray for those who suffer from disasters, violence, hunger and poverty. UMCOR Hotline: |
