Doris Howard

Doris Howard’s World Thank Offering accumulates to between $20 and $30 a year with each coin she tosses into an antique canning jar. She knows that every penny will go to mission with women, children and youth -- but especially to women because it is women around the world who recognize her jar as one in which to preserve foods.

"I also like to give Gift-in-Memory cards," Ms. Howard said. "I’ve been doing that intentionally for the last five years." The cards not only mean giving to mission, they also keep recipients informed of mission.

"I like to get other people aware of what we’re doing," said Ms. Howard, who is treasurer of United Methodist Women in her district -- Iowa Conference’s Dubuque District. "Response is great for that. I like to see the interconnected circles at the end of the articles. I cut them out and let folks know that’s where the money goes!"

She submits articles to her district newsletter to emphasize the kinds of mission with which United Methodist Women is involved.

Ms. Howard has been a member of United Methodist Women since 1961 when she joined its predecessor organization, the Women’s Society of Christian Service. She joined because she was seeking fellowship with other young women.

"Our farm is in a small rural area," she said.

Ms. Howard has been in social action for four years in her district.

Her friend M. Mackey explained:

"Doris sows and harvests actively on her farm with her husband. She also sows and harvests the seeds of social action for United Methodist Women."

Ms. Howard has served on Iowa Conference’s Board of Church and Society, in local-church leadership and as a lay member of annual conference.

"I am a solid believer in United Methodist Women," she said. "I wished I could make a difference in the world, and with our mission, I am."
