However, traditional gender ideology and theology spurs on discrimination. This article explores the challenges of and juxtapositions between traditional and new gender ideologies and cultures in Indonesia.

Written from the perspective of an Indonesian woman, this article explores the challenges and conflicts that emerge when addressing the role of women in the church. It looks at what women do now in the church and the gaps between policy and practice. Finally, Ms. Bone gives her vision for the future, the transformation of laws and customs, and the liberation of women in many ways.

The people suffer, but are determined to rise out of the economic situation. This is the message shared by Bishop Humala Doloksaribu and his wife, Rita, from the Methodist Church in Indonesia. This article delves into the economic crisis, shares stories, and gives examples of the temporary aid needed.

"A Spirit of Power: A Spirit of Love" by Marie Sinulingga-Roeroe

Karo Batak Protestant Church in Indonesia has started a woman's movement that helps women think and act for others. As women develop their own self-reliance and faith, they can then reach out to others. This article explores the work and programs of the church and how it will continue its outreach.

"Training for Self-Reliance: Training for Faithfulness" by Wallia Keliat

Rashel Purba custom designs, sews and sells clothing from her own kiosk in Berastagi, Indonesia. Now, she and the women she employs are self-sufficient and able to support their families. The training and support Ms. Purba received came from the Christian Women's Course, a project of Moria, the women's organization of the Karo Batak Protestant Church, an Indonesian partner church of The United Methodist Church. This article explores the program, its goals and the ways it's changed lives.

"Massacre: The Story of East Timor" by Amy Goodman

Told by a woman who escaped one of the East Timor massacres, this story gives another look at East Timor, a country that has been occupied by Indonesia since the 70s. It gives another view of the support the United States has given to the human rights violations, the reasons reporters are prohibited from the country, and the massacres that continue.

"When Tradition Meets Emancipation" by Mientje Roembiak

At the Eastern Edge of Indonesia on an island of New Guinea, Irian Jaya is among the nation's and world's most isolated regions. The isolation in many ways has preserved traditional cultures. This article explores the dynamics that evolve when efforts of women's emancipation meets traditional roles. It gives a history, examples, and ideas to support the Irianese women's efforts toward self-development and empowerment.
