A 23-year-old up-and-coming opera singer living in New York City appears to have a bright future. Yet, she will tell you her future did not always look so bright. As a teen growing up in St. Louis, this young woman had family problems, lived for a month at St. Vincent's Hospital, then moved to Epworth Children and Family Services. Epworth is a residential treatment center founded in 1864 as a Methodist children's home. This article looks into this woman's story and what Epworth still offers to young people today.

"Make Us Truly One" by Frances S. Smith

The Rev. Lyudmila Garbuzova sang the Russian words, "To you, O God, I come now pleading...make us truly one!" at the Global Gathering of the General Board of Global Ministries. These words have special meaning for this woman, as she says that women and children seem to bear the economic stress of her nation. This article looks at the birth of the Christian Women's Association in Russia, the role of the Women's Division, the purposes of the situation, and how Ms. Garbuzova and others in the organization strive to meet the needs of many people in suffering.

David and Margaret Home in LaVerne, California, tries to create order from chaos -- "chaos in the lives of girls ages 11-18, that is." This article explores the wide range of girls coming to this home and their problems. Then, it looks at the way the residence cares for 115 girls, the range of programs, the history, and the future challenge.

"Love and Warmth for Troubled Boys" by Paul Jeffrey

One hundred sixty boys receive love and education from people in a home tucked away in the mountains of the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. The Methodist Home has given this service to young boys since 1939. This article explores the home, its services, and the family atmosphere it provides to those who lack family.
